Canada's New Government Invests $300,000 in Federal Homelessness Funding for Joey's Home in Edmonton

EDMONTON, ALBERTA - (CCNMatthews - July 18, 2007) - Mr. Laurie Hawn, Member of Parliament for Edmonton Centre, on behalf of the Honourable Monte Solberg, Minister of Human Resources and Social Development, today participated at the opening of Joey's Home in Edmonton, a transitional home for individuals with developmental disabilities.

"Canada's New Government is delivering on its commitment to help those who are homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless," said Mr. Hawn. "This investment will make a real difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities in Edmonton."

Joey's Home, named in honour of Joe Moss from the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club, will help its residents get the support they need to live as independently as possible. This 12-unit facility will also provide assisted living for aging individuals with developmental disabilities in Edmonton.

Canada's new government, through the Edmonton Housing Trust Fund, provided $300,000 in federal homelessness funding. The new Homelessness Partnering Strategy began on April 1, 2007. It will provide $269.6 million over two years to help communities across Canada combat homelessness more effectively by putting in place structures and supports that help people move into self-sufficiency, and by fostering partnerships aimed at achieving concrete results and enhanced sustainability.
