Perception is Reality

There's an old and very true saying that "perception is reality." I'm a big believer that people believe what they want to believe, and you can't make them believe anything else. The trick, though, is understanding who perceives what. Making this determination can be a lot harder than you might imagine, especially when we're talking about growing a business.
I was on an airplane recently. The plane was flying over the mountains near Los Angeles, and I was struck by how, from the plane, the mountains looked like little wrinkles in the skin of the earth. They certainly didn't look that way from my car. From my car, the mountains seem enormous and ominous.
It's a matter of perspective.
When you are running and growing your business, you need to know what your perspective is. Are you looking down from a great height, or up from a great depth? If you don't have the perspective from the top and you are mired in details, then you need to get additional perspective on your business by looking down from the top. If you can't do that yourself, then you need to find someone who can help you gain that top-down perspective.
If, however, you are always looking at the big picture, you'd better surround yourself with people who can look at the details - and look to you for leadership in regard to the big picture.
So, as you are working hard every day to build your company, or as you're building your career, you need to know that your perspective fits with the reality of your business's needs. The big picture needs the little picture; the details need the global perspective.
