'Deserving Design' Debuts on Wednesday, September 12 at 9 p.m. ET/PT
Vern Yip, renowned architectural and interior designer and HGTV Design Star judge, will host an uplifting and inspirational new weekly series that will give a break to those who really need it. In each half-hour episode of HGTV's Deserving Design, which sneak peeks on Sunday, September 9 at 10 p.m. ET/PT and will air in its regular time slot on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT beginning September 12, viewers will voyage with Vern as he travels to find the country's most deserving people and reward them with dramatic room makeovers. Viewers will see Vern as he gets to know the selected family or individual in their home and watch as he creates a dramatic room design inspired by their personal story. Viewers wanting more of Vern's practical design, space planning and color tips can go to http://www.HGTV.com .
In every episode of Deserving Design, Vern's work doesn't stop after the completion of the original room makeover. He also will surprise the individual/family with a second room that has been redesigned without their knowledge as a reward for their remarkable accomplishments. Each episode will showcase Vern's innate ability to create spaces that are both beautiful and functional. An award-winning talent, Vern not only transforms design-challenged spaces into remarkable rooms, but also looks to transform the lives of those deserving homeowners.
"The personal stories we share in Deserving Design are those we all can relate to on some level," said Michael Dingley, senior vice president, programming and content strategy, HGTV. "Viewers will be amazed at how a room makeover can not only help to bring balance and joy to a home, but also inspire people trying to get back on their feet and help to change their lives forever."
In the premiere episode, viewers will meet sisters Kia and Binkii Firstley, who lost nearly everything to Hurricane Katrina. After the storm, their father Gladdis stayed behind to rebuild the family home, while the sisters and their mother, Tyra, reluctantly moved to a cramped rental home in Los Angeles. The Firstley's living quarters are indeed tight, but it is all they can afford. The girls, who dream of becoming stand-up comedians, use humor to cope with their situation as they try to share a small bedroom. Their mother sleeps in the only other bedroom, which is cluttered with the family's salvaged belongings. After hearing their story, Vern creates a unique design plan tailored to suit the small bedroom that Kia and Binkii share. And unbeknownst to the family, he also surprises Mom, Tyra, with a new bedroom.
"As a designer it's always gratifying to see how good design can enhance someone's life," said Yip. "Deserving Design gives me the opportunity to change peoples' lives and bring smiles to the faces of those who truly deserve it - which is the biggest reward of all!"
