Martin Sheen Stands Up to Stop Execution of An Innocent Man
With the world engrossed with Paris Hilton's predicament, scant attention is being paid to the predicament of Mohiuddin "Din" Ahmed. US Homeland Security is set to be deported Din to Bangladesh for execution, for a crime he did not commit.
Actor/Activist Martin Sheen released the following statement: "I support Amnesty International and the Conference of Catholic Bishops, on both sides of the border, in their efforts to help Din Ahmed find safe haven in Canada. The death penalty is wrong and Din Ahmed received that death penalty during an in absentia trial, which is doubly wrong. I urge the US State Department and the Department of Homeland Security to work with Canada in the hope of finding a humanitarian solution to this life and death problem."
With the celebrity endorsement of Actor/Activist Martin Sheen, traffic at the website www.FreeDin.org has increased exponentially. The website has been established to assist people in obtaining information about Din's crisis, so that they may contact their Senators and Congressmen/women, to voice their objections to Homeland Security's deportation of Din.
There is no extradition treaty between Bangladesh and the US, so the reason for such an action by the US does not make sense.
Washington can work with Ottawa to save Din's life by sending Din to Canada to live with his Canadian relatives. Yesterday, in the Canadian House of Commons, Liberal MP Mike Savage formally asked that Canada intervene to save this innocent man.
As Din's family is in tears, Din's many supporters have vowed to make sure that: "If Din is deported to Bangladesh, the eyes of the world will be on the way that he is treated by the Bangladesh Government."
In 1996 Mohiuddin "Din" Ahmed received an unfair trial in Bangladesh when he was tried in absentia. Din was a junior officer on August 15th, 1975, at the time of the coup and murder of the President of Bangladesh and reportedly over a mile away from the scene of the crime,
