Wal-Mart Could Lead to Travis AFB Closure, Claims Community Group
A proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter here near a deadly part of Highway 12 known as "Blood Alley" may also have a major impact - and could lead to the eventual closure of - Travis Air Force Base, according to information obtained by a community group opposed to the Wal-Mart project.
A NEWS CONFERENCE is scheduled for THURSDAY at 11 a.m. at the Travis AFB MAIN GATE (Visitor's Center), by the Suisun Alliance and Suisun Citizens League, which will make public a series of letters, authored by Travis AFB and Solano County officials.
The letters are highly critical of the Wal-Mart location and suggest it may threaten the county's biggest employer, Travis AFB, which employs over 14,000 residents and contributes more than $1 billion to the local economy.
In one letter, sent to the Solano County staff from an official with the county Airport Land Use Commission, it states that the Wal-Mart store violates the Travis Airport Land Use Plan because the store would allow too many people per acre to the base.
Later Thursday, Solano County's Airport Land Use Commission is expected to discuss the Wal-Mart Supercenter and its impact. That meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Solano County Administration Center (675 Texas St., first floor) in Fairfield.
