by Capt. Mark Lappegaard, 1/34 BCT PAO.
Sergeant Chuck Schulz, gunner, a member of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division's Civil Military Operations team, searches the dust cloud for his leader's vehicle moments after it was hit by a roadside bomb June 6, 2007, south of Nassiriyah, Iraq. No one was seriously injured in the blast.
The trailer behind this vehicle holds gifts for the grand opening of the fifth school completed by the CMO team from the Minnesota Army National Guard. With nearly 400 successful missions, more than $30 million invested in local reconstruction, and less than 60 days remaining in their 16-month combat tour, this was the first attack on the team. "I could have left theater without that." said leader Maj. Jake Kulzer, of Minneapolis, Minn. Since deploying in September, 2005, the 1/34 BCT is currently the longest deployed unit in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
