Beautiful Fall Leaves

All of us have had the sad and painful experience of watching great athletes stay in the game past their prime. It's not pretty to watch these once-fabulous athletes struggle against newer, younger, and more athletic competitors. The same thing can also happen in companies; people can overstay their welcome and outlive their usefulness.
Business owners and managers need to pay attention to change, and either stay up to speed with possibilities or get out of the way so that beneficial changes can occur. Business owners deal with this issue all the time - or they should. They need to be aware of whether they are helping their company or standing in its way. If owners are in the way, they need to move aside for the benefit of the company and the people who are making the company work.
This concept is well illustrated by the vibrant colors of fall leaves.
Did you ever notice how leaves turn beautiful colors before they fall? Leaves go out at their best - they look the most beautiful just before they fall. Managers, business owners, and entrepreneurs need to think about this. They need to go out at their best. Not only will this maximize their contribution to their companies, others will remember them at their best.
So, as you are working hard every day to build your company, or as you're building your career, deal proactively with this issue. The best and most successful ones deal with it well. It's in the entrepreneur's best interest - and the best interests of his or her employees and clients - to facilitate the transition by stepping aside, selling the business, or making some other arrangement when the time comes.
