PIPSC celebrates Public Service Week by Rolling out Promotional Campaign

OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (CCNMatthews - June 11, 2007) - The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) is marking National Public Service Week with a campaign aimed at promoting the work of professionals in the public service.

Television ads will run across the country for the entire week beginning June 10, 2007. Four one-minute vignettes featuring the work of PIPSC members and the contributions they make to Canadian society have been produced. The vignettes feature the important work done by our international tax auditors, our marine research scientists, our computer systems specialists, and our engineers. The broadcast schedule is available at www.pipsc.ca.

At the campaign roll-out, PIPSC President Michele Demers stated "Since becoming President, I have made it a priority to visit members in their workplaces where I can observe first hand the nature of the work they do, its importance to Canadians, and their dedication to the task at hand. I cannot be more proud to be the President of this great union than I am on those occasions". In June, Ms. Demers will be visiting more member work sites, on Vancouver Island and in New Brunswick.

Back in 1992, the Professional Institute conceived the idea of National Public Service Week as an effective means of recognizing the contribution of federal employees while building pride in the public service of Canada. Opposition Member of Parliament Marlene Catterall (Liberal, Ottawa-West) supported the idea and introduced a Private Member's Bill which she steered through the House of Commons. The Bill won support from all parties and was adopted by Parliament.

Every year since, the government of the day has paused in June to honour public service employees and recognize the contribution they make to the delivery of services to Canadians.

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is a national union representing more than 50,000 professionals and scientists across Canada.

The vignettes are available in mpeg or dvd formats.
