SOP's Tucker Joines Takes Center Stage in Vero Beach "High School Musical "

By Nancy Lee Wolfe

Tenth grade Vero Beach teens Tucker Joines and Susan Moore earned the right to take their talents to the stage. Both teens landed lead roles in the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center production of Disney's "High School Musical".

"High School Musical has been a great experience for me and also an extraordinary opportunity," said Tucker Joines who was cast in the role of Troy Bolton, "My fellow cast members and I are eager to finally be getting on stage after the long hours of rehearsal."

Moore, who plays the character Gabriella Mantez agreed, "I am very excited to have the lead role in Disney's 'High School Musical.'"

"I'm so excited to send this message to kids through my character. The play gives a great message to kids about believing in themselves and non conformity," said Moore.

Disney's "High School Musical" is a fast paced, up-beat, heart-racing adventure. Fine Arts Director, Katherine Cairns, and her talented magicians have placed this production on the plate for Vero Beach patrons.

Joines, as Troy Bolton, is Team Captain of the East High Wildcats. However, after singing a duet with the lovely Gabriella Mantez, played by Moore, he discovers that he is interested in more than basketball.

"I really want to immerse myself in my character. I even got my haircut", said Joines.

Gabriella, as Susan Moore, is not as familiar with her surroundings as Troy is. She is new to the scene of East High. She is a wiz in math and science, but her smart head is turned by the handsome and dashing young Troy. The duet they share affects her as it affects Troy.

"Gabriella is a shy, smart girl who moves around a lot." Moore explains. "During the play, she discovers she has a talent for singing and comes out of her shell."

Both stars give credit to their family and friends for helping them win this opportunity, "My dad has been a huge influence on me. He has always been there and keeps me striving to give my all," said Joines.

Likewise, Moore expressed her appreciation, "I am honored to have a lead in such a popular show. "I am grateful to my Director, Dee Rose Homsher, for giving me this opportunity."

The cast and crew work very hard to deliver world-class productions. Just ask Assistant Principal, Chip Humphrey. Mr. Humphrey hardily recommends productions by the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center. "When I saw their production of 'Fiddler on the Roof,' I thought I was sitting in a Broadway Theater."

"High School Musical" promises to deliver top-notch entertainment and family-friendly fun. The Student Operated Press sends congratulations to cast and crew. Break a leg!

This full-length stage musical runs approximately two hours with an intermission and is appropriate for the entire family. Seating is not reserved, with very reasonable prices of $10 for general admission and $5 for children (10 years and under). Performances begin at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
