Susan G. Komen Sacramento Race for The Cure Expecting 25,000

Celebrating 25 years of Komen for the Cure

Race For The Cure

SACRAMENTO – On Saturday, May 12, 2007, approximately 25,000 Sacramento area supporters, activists and survivors are expected to participate in the 2007 Komen Sacramento Race for the Cure at Cal Expo, one of the largest 5K running events in Northern California. The races kick off at 7:45 a.m. with the 5K run. The post race expo runs from 8 – 11:30 a.m., and the awards and Survivor Ceremony takes place at 10 a.m.

“After 25 years, Komen for the Cure is still fully committed to ending breast cancer forever,” said Donna Sanderson, executive director of the Sacramento Valley Affiliate. “Each year the Sacramento race grows, as more people want to get involved. It is truly awe inspiring and humbling to see the people of Sacramento gather around this promise.”

Komen is taking advantage of their 25th anniversary to re-energize researchers, advocates and survivors about breast cancer awareness, reminding everyone that 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime.

The Sacramento Valley Affiliate aims to raise $2.5 million from the 2007 Race. Up to 75 percent of the funds raised will stay in the Sacramento area and will be dedicated to providing funding for local breast care programs. And at least 25 percent of the proceeds will support research through the national Komen for the Cure Award and Research Grant Program.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
