Be an Expert
By Joel Block
Specialize in a certain area and become an expert. I encourage all entrepreneurs to specialize as much as possible. Some entrepreneurs believe that being a "Jack of all trades" will help them maximize their earnings. In fact, the opposite is true.
Think about it. Prospective clients will never recognize you as an expert in your field if you haven't staked out a well-defined niche. The more specialized you are, the more likely you will be to dominate the niche you have chosen. Without a well-articulated area of expertise, you'll drift off - in prospective clients' minds, at least - into the vast ocean of seemingly similar service providers. Without a well-defined niche, you are also likely to drift into situations that don't advance the goals and objectives that you have set for yourself.
So, as you are working hard every day to build your company, or as you're building your career, don't stray too far from your core goals and your core business. Put a dot on the wall and make sure that every action you take is aimed at that dot, or you risk paying the ultimate price, which in entrepreneurship, is failure.
