Volunteer Leaders to Speak at Showcase in Event by President's Council

The public is invited to join three outstanding District of Columbia volunteer leaders 2:30 to 4 p.m. Monday, April 9, as the President's Council on Service and Participation holds a Volunteer and National Service Showcase at the DC Jewish Community Center. Speakers will discuss the life- changing power of volunteerism, and 20 nonprofits will bring pictorial highlights of local and national service projects.

Panelists include Millicent Williams, Executive Director of Serve DC; Jason King, who was recognized by PBS affiliate WETA-TV as a "Hometown Hero" in honor of his co-founding a successful nonprofit that engages parents in their children's education; and Monchello Mabry, who turned his life around after being incarcerated as a teen and now serves as an active member of Earth Conservation Corps.

Members of the President's Council attending the meeting are Chairwoman Jean Case, actor Stephen Baldwin, broadcast journalist Myrka Dellanos, philanthropic executive Evern Cooper Epps, children's safety advocate Mary Jo Myers, and Wendy Spencer, CEO of Volunteer Florida. The Volunteer Showcase will include pictorial displays and demonstrations of service projects in the District of Columbia and across the nation, testimonials, and presentation of President's Volunteer Service Awards.

Jason King, co-founder of Turning the Page, a nonprofit organization that seeks to foster a lifelong love of learning in elementary school children by creating a resource rich school community that encourages parental involvement and voluntary reading and learning.

Millicent Williams, Executive Director of Serve DC and formerly employed by the Greater Southeast Community Hospital, the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Children, Youth, Families and Elders in the Executive Office of the Mayor in District of Columbia, and the Children's National Medical Center.

Monchello Mabry, of Earth Conservation Corps, who is involved in video documenting the Civic Justice Corps (ECC's newest youth program) and reforms taking place under the current DC Mayoral administration.
