Veterans Affairs Canada: Victoria Marks 90th Anniversary of Battle of Vimy Ridge

The Battle of Vimy Ridge began on April 9, 1917. It was there that the Canadians captured Vimy Ridge. This success came at a cost of more than 10,000 casualties, of which 3,598 were fatal.

The Honourable Iona Campagnolo, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, and the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, were joined by youth and other dignitaries at a ceremony at the British Columbia Legislature to mark the 90th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

"Ninety years ago, our country accomplished - through courage and ingenuity - what other Allied forces could not: we captured and held Vimy Ridge," said Minister Thompson.

"The Battle of Vimy Ridge speaks to the Canadians of the day and Canadian leadership style. With a population of less than eight million, Canada stepped forward with over 600,000 soldiers who applied to war; the lessons learned in the mines, on the farm, in the forest and on the fishing grounds. Canadians in uniform have always displayed ingenuity in the face of great challenge," said Rear Admiral Roger Girouard, Commander Maritime Forces Pacific.

This successful event on the lawn of the Legislature was well attended by both Veterans and public. The event began with a parade including dignitaries, Veterans, Veteran's organizations, Canadian Forces, youth and members of the community. The parade was followed by a wreath laying and candlelight ceremony at the Cenotaph, on the lawn of the British Columbia Legislature.
