Statement by the Minister of National Defence on Military Decorations Presented by the Governor General

OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (CCNMatthews - Feb. 19, 2007) - For the first time ever, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaelle Jean, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada today awarded six Military Valour Decorations to members of the Canadian Forces. Her Excellency also presented 33 Meritorious Service Decorations (Military Division) to individuals whose specific achievements have brought honour to the Canadian Forces and to Canada.

The Honourable Gordon O'Connor, Minister of National Defence, attended the ceremony and issued the following statement:

"This is a great day for the Canadian Forces and for Canada. The heroic efforts of all of the soldiers honoured today reflect the noble Canadian tradition of defending international peace and security in parts of the world that are plagued by turmoil and upheaval, such as in Afghanistan.

The Military Valour Decoration, in particular, is among the very highest honours we have to offer for those who show courage in the presence of the enemy. This is the first time these awards have been presented since they were created in 1993, making today a most noteworthy occasion.

I know all Canadians will join me in praising these true Canadian heroes, who represent the very best that this country has to offer."

In a separate event held on Sunday, the Chief of the Defence Staff, General Rick Hillier, presented a total of nearly 40 decorations to members of the Canadian Forces. The Minister added the following statement:

"I am extremely proud of all the outstanding members of our armed forces recognized over the last two days. I congratulate not only them, but also the units in which they serve - as well as their families."
