Anti-War Community to Launch 'More Confrontational' Campaign
Anti-war community to launch 'more confrontational' campaign to convince Rep. Matsui, Congress to end all funding for Iraq war
SACRAMENTO - In light of the 3,000 US dead milestone, and the peace mandate by voters in November, community leaders here say they will intensify a campaign to convince Congress - and specifically Sacramento Rep. Doris Matsui (5th CD) - to oppose any new funding for the war and occupation of Iraq.
A major news conference to outline the campaign will be held Thursday, 9:30 a.m. at the Federal Courthouse (5th & I Streets).
Veterans, prominent religious leaders and other community peace advocates will attend, and are expected to "visit" Rep. Matsui's office following brief statements.
The announced campaign will incorporate "more confrontational" tactics to influence Rep. Matsui to oppose the anticipated $160 billion additional funding for the war.
"There will be no more free passes for Rep. Matsui. By cutting off funding the war will end, as will the killing and maiming of tens of thousands Americans and Iraqis, and the waste of hundreds of billions of tax dollars," said George Main, Veterans for Peace/Sacramento president and a member of the Sacramento Coalition to End the War.
Rep. Matsui has not publically declared her opposition to the war or signed on to initiatives to truly end it, despite the obvious public mandate in the November elections suggesting voters wanted the war to end. She also has refused to personally meet with constituents, including veterans, said the coalition.
