PSEPC: Foreign National Alleging to be Paul William Hampel has Been Removed from Canada
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (CCNMmatthews - Dec. 26, 2006) - Minister of Public Safety, the Honourable Stockwell Day, today announced that the foreign national alleging to be Paul William Hampel has been removed from Canada and returned to Russia.
"The removal of this individual is an example of how the security certificate process can and should work," said Minister Day. "I want to commend the work of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, the Canada Border Services Agency and Correctional Services Canada on this successful operation."
On Nov. 14, 2006, a foreign national alleging to be a Canadian citizen named Paul William Hampel was arrested in Montreal after a security certificate under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) was issued against him.
On Dec. 4, 2006, the Federal Court found the security certificate to be reasonable and a removal order was formally issued against him.
"As this case demonstrates, individuals who do not respect our laws and threaten the safety of our communities are not welcome in Canada." added Minister Day.
