Hawaii Air Guard celebrates 60th

by Petty Officer R.J. Moraida

The Hawaii Air National Guard's history goes back before the U.S. Air Force was a separate service, and 12 years before the state the guardsmen serve was actually admitted to the Union.

Guardsmen past and present recently came together here to celebrate the organization's 60th anniversary and to reflect on how the organization has changed over the years.

Nearly 1,000 Airmen and veterans, including three founding members of the unit, attended the celebration. It also was a chance to mark a milestone. Boeing Corporation presented the unit with an award for 70,000 hours of accident-free flying in their F-15 Eagles.

Members of the Hawaii ANG are currently deployed on border patrol missions in the United States, and are serving in Southwest Asia and the Horn of Africa.

While the Hawaii ANG's mission has changed over the past 60 years, being a force of readiness for the state of Hawaii continues to be its cornerstone.
