Tabling of O'Connor Commission Policy Review: A New Review Mechanism for the RCMP's National Security Activities
OTTAWA, ONTARIO - (CCNMatthews - Dec. 12, 2006) - Minister of Public Safety, the Honourable Stockwell Day, issued the following statement after tabling the O'Connor Commission Report on Policy Review.
"Yesterday evening, we received the second report from the Commission of Inquiry into the Actions of Canadian Officials in Relation to Maher Arar. The mandate for Part II of the Inquiry was to make recommendations on an independent, arm's length review mechanism for the activities of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police with respect to national security.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to extend my appreciation to Justice Dennis O'Connor, and his staff, for their dedication and hard work over the past two and half years on this Inquiry.
Canada's New Government has already started to implement the 23 recommendations outlined in Justice O'Connor's first report and will continue to do so.
While Justice O'Connor's report made clear that what happened to Mr. Arar took place under the previous government, our Government is committed to taking the actions needed to prevent similar events from happening again."
