Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine: Burnaby Fertility Clinic Introduces New Ultrasound Screen for High-Risk Pregnancies

BURNABY, BRITISH COLUMBIA - (CCNMatthews - Nov. 28, 2006) - With couples choosing to have children later in life, doctors are faced with an increasing number of high-risk pregnancy situations and fertility issues. This has created a need for more accurate and comprehensive first trimester pregnancy screening, as well as increasing fertility awareness for those in the community.

The Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine (PCRM) in Burnaby, BC, is a new comprehensive fertility centre which addresses both issues. PCRM offers the latest reproductive technologies, paired with a First Trimester Comprehensive Screening (FTS) test. This FTS test promises up to 90% screening detection for fetal abnormalities - a significant improvement over more traditional, invasive methods.

The key advantage of PCRM's First Trimester Screen is that it allows for more accurate screening earlier in the pregnancy. Traditional tests such as maternal blood screening are normally carried out between 15-18 weeks and only deliver a 50-70% detection rate. The FTS is carried out using ultrasound between 11-14 weeks and has up to a 90% detection rate for abnormalities, with a low false positive rate.

The Pacific Centre for Reproductive Medicine opened this past summer. It also offers BC couples world-class care and the latest in reproductive technology including in vitro fertilization (IVF), Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), as well as the latest techniques in fertility preservation including egg cryopreservation.

To find out more about the First Trimester Comprehensive Screen and other reproductive health options available at PCRM, contact your doctor, visit the PCRM website or call for a consultation.

The next Public Forum sponsored by PCRM where Fertility and First Trimester Ultrasound screening will be discussed is on December 11.
