Hussein Verdict Due Sunday: Likely Impact on U.S. Elections?

President Bush and his GOP colleagues are in a bit of a bind politically and need a miracle or two before next Tuesday. Without something approximating divine intervention, Washington, D.C. could fall into the hands of liberals in the Democrat Party.

Republican woes stem primarily from public impatience and opposition to the war in Iraq. However, in an odd twist of irony, events scheduled for this weekend in Baghdad could actually boost GOP chances next Tuesday.

Sometime this Sunday, Saddam Hussein, former president of Iraq, will learn his fate after being on trial for more than one year to adjudicate alleged crimes against humanity. It is widely anticipated that Hussein will be convicted and sentenced to death for barbaric and brutal crimes.

If Hussein were, in fact, convicted in an Iraqi court by Iraqi judges and prosecutors, instant credibility would be added to the Bush argument and the president's decision to invade Iraq in 2003.

Bush already deserves enormous credit for the fact that Hussein's trial is the first time that a Middle East leader has been brought to justice for alleged human rights abuses. A conviction would add to the Bush legacy.

But legacies are for future generations and historians to sort out in the decades to follow. Those of us alive in the present need dramatic results before next Tuesday in order to save America.

And what happens if Hussein is unexpectedly acquitted?

No one knows for sure exactly, but rumor has it that in such an eventuality, Karl Rove would end up working for Ramsey Clark as assistant court jester in one of Hussein's palaces!
