NEW ORLEANS, La. - Nov. 3 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) -- An advance in uterine visualization during embryo transfer was reported to improve pregnancy rates for patients undergoing In Vitro Fertilization. The preliminary findings of an ongoing study were reported today at the 62nd annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in New Orleans, LA. Dr. Jeffrey D. Fisch, of the Sher Institute for Reproductive Medicine(SM), Las Vegas, NV (SIRM(tm)-Las Vegas) presented data evaluating the use of 4D ultrasound-guidance during embryo transfer.

Of 210 embryo transfers in women under 40 years of age with good quality embryos, 118 had standard 2D-ultrasound guidance, while 82 had 4D-ultrasound guidance. There were no differences between the two groups in patient age, number of prior IVF attempts or the number of embryos transferred. Ongoing pregnancy rates were significantly higher for the 4D ultrasound group (48/82; 59%), than for the 2D group (50/118; 42%). Implantation rates were also higher in the 4D group (37%) than the 2D group (30%).

Dr. Fisch and his team are among the first to evaluate the use of 4D ultrasound on IVF outcomes in a large population. "Adding 4D ultrasound guidance to the embryo transfer protocol has significantly improved visualization of the endometrial cavity," said Dr. Fisch.

"We have seen a definite improvement in the IVF pregnancy rates at our center since we began using 4D ultrasound to monitoring our embryo transfers on a routine basis." These data further support the use of ultrasound monitoring during embryo transfer.
