'California Connected' Takes to The Water for Salmon Industry Investigation
By Alan Gray, NewsBlaze
Hook Line and Sinking
California's salmon industry is in big trouble, and it could mean a one-hundred million dollar loss to costal fishing communities this year. California Connected travels up and down the coast talking to fishermen and government regulators to get a handle on the problem and look for solutions.
As Correspondent Craig Miller discovers, the findings are grim. This year regulators shut down the commercial fishing industry for two months during the height of the season in their efforts to save the fish. Fishermen say that caused them to suffer for a crisis they didn't create and can't fix. Everyone agrees the trouble isn't with the ocean but far upstream where the Salmon spawn.
With a threat of more restrictions on tap for next year, many veteran commercial fishermen are walking away from their boats. We'll take a hard look at a part of the state's costal heritage that is in danger of dying.
