'California Connected' Dishes The Dirt on Sport Officials in The State
Umpire Shortage
This week California Connected examines the state's ever-growing shortage of youth sports officials and the impact it has on our children.
Umpires and referees are in short supply. Some complain they are being spread so thing and being paid so poorly, they are giving up and dropping out altogether. And sometimes the games get out of control.
Last year, there were 1,100 incidents against officials logged in the Southern Section alone. As school construction continues to grow and the numbers of sports officials continues to decline, young athletes pay the price.
