Crossfire War - India Intercepts Infiltration Attempts into Kashmir-New Pattern
By Willard Payne
Crossfire War - TEHRAN WATCH - South Asia Theatre: Tehran - Kabul - Islamabad/Delhi; Indian Army Intercepts Two Infiltration Attempts by Islamic Units - Saturday Night - Sunday Morning - 12 Hour Gunbattle
Night Watch: SRINAGAR - "We have foiled two infiltration attempts and killed eight militants along the LoC." (Line of Control)
That was a statement from an Indian Army spokesman after two gunbattles in different sectors of the divided Kashmir state. Reuters reports that the engagement that began Saturday night in the Guerz sector, 75 miles north of Srinagar continued for 12 hours and may still be ongoing. The other encounter took place in Poonch 48 miles southwest of Srinagar. [SWISSINFO]
With the end of the monsoon and with the preparations by Iran - Pakistan, which could be complete, we may now see a new pattern of infilitration attempts, by larger size Islamic units, attempting to infiltrate from at least two sectors simultaneously.
The only question is how many encounters it would take in order to force India to use its hot pursuit policy. I suspect the encounters would have to inflict serious losses on the Indian units and at least several of the militants will have to escape into the area of Kashmir controlled by Pakistan. Another terrorist attack inside India, similar to the one in Mumbai in July and Malegaon in September may also have to occur in order to set off the fourth war.
