Crossfire War - 26 Hour Gunbattle in Central Srinagar - Kashmir

By Willard Payne

Crossfire War - TEHRAN WATCH - South Asia Theatre: Tehran - Kabul - Islamabad/Delhi; 26 Hour Gunbattle in Central Srinagar - Continuation of Attack on Indian Security Base in City

Night Watch: SRINAGAR - The three man suicide unit from Al-Mansurian, that attacked the Indian security base in central Srinagar, at midday yesterday, engaged Indian police for 26 hours. Reuters reports that 10 people were killed, seven police and two of the Islamic militants. A spokesman for Al-Mansurian called newspapers in Srinagar and stated, "One of our mujahid has returned to base and two were martyred, in the attacks. Our mujahideen killed at least 11 policemen." Gopal Sharma, Director-General of Police in Jammu-Kashmir State said, "The operation is over, now (but) we are still searching the area for abandoned ammunition and explosives." [SWISSINFO]

I suspect Tehran - Islamabad are studying the operation and its effectiveness, such a small unit attracting so much attention from a much larger force and in an important area. Most people knew that during Ramadan attacks by Islamic militants, mujahideen, would increase. Chances are the next attacks will be made by much larger units and in more than one location. That will force Delhi to use its "hot pursuit" policy and attack the militant bases inside the parts of Jammu- Kashmir state that are controlled by Islamabad.
