Executive Coaches of Orange County Enters Fifth Year of Service to Nonprofit Community; Announces New Coaching Staff
Coaching Programs Provide Value to Communities and Help Nonprofits Fulfill More of Their Mission
Newport Beach, CA (September 6, 2006) - Imagine walking into the office of a high-level executive at corporations such as Procter & Gamble, Mattel Toys, Johnson & Johnson or General Electric and asking them to share best practices to help you improve your organization's management, leadership, strategies, service offerings, marketing programs, human resources, finances and technologies. Founded in 2002, the Executive Coaches of Orange County ("ECofOC"), has been providing the nonprofit sector just that opportunity.
ECofOC's mission is to help nonprofits fulfill more of their mission by providing one-on-one and team coaching programs to nonprofit managers and executive directors. "Our coaches donate their time and experience to assist nonprofit managers develop and implement capacity building strategies that will enable their organizations to do more of their good work in communities throughout Orange County," said Founder Bob Cryer, a former P&G executive who resides in Corona del Mar. "We do this to ultimately help the quality of life for less fortunate children, families and seniors living in Orange County. The only cost to our client is time and commitment," noted Cryer.
With 23 coaches as of press time, ECofOC is the largest supplier of coaches to Orange County nonprofits. ECofOC's coaches are seasoned managers who come primarily from the for-profit sector. This month, ECofOC's coaching roster grew by three, with the addition of Patrick Kelly of San Juan Capistrano, Martha Ryan of Corona del Mar and Larry Tucker of Newport Beach. "Patrick, Martha and Larry are great additions to ECofOC. We welcome our new coaches and look forward to seeing them interact with our clients," said Cryer.
Each coach commits to giving at least 100 hours per year to help Orange County's nonprofits. Nonprofit managers who apply and are accepted into the Personal Coaching Program agree to meet with their coach monthly for at least one year. The Capacity Building Team Coaching Program requires a nonprofit manager to organize a team of five to ten people who agree to spend at least eight hours per month to implement the strategies they have developed with their coach. Among ECofOC's 99 past and current clients are the Philharmonic Society, the Orange County Conservation Corps, the Community Action Partnership of Orange County, Human Options, Boy Scouts of Orange County, Orange County Department of Education, UCI Medical Center and UCI Merage Business School and United Cerebral Palsy of Orange County. Bob Cryer, Founder
Bob Cryer worked for Procter & Gamble from 1962 to 1994, where he managed departments that provided management consulting and information technology services to P&G's product development, advertising, sales and finance departments. From 1994 to 1998, he operated his own business as a financial planner and investment advisor to P&G executives. From 1998 to 2002, he spent most of his time as a SCORE (Service Corp. of Retired Executives) volunteer helping individuals develop business plans for a micro business startups or re-launches, and as an Executive Service Corp. volunteer helping nonprofit executive directors improve their effectiveness as managers and strategic planners. He founded Executive Coaches of Orange County in 2002.
Bob has a B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering, and an MBA in Operations Research, all from Cornell University, and has passed the licensing exam for Certified Financial Planners (CFP). Bob lives with his wife Louise in Newport Coast, CA. He has two grown daughters, and two grandchildren in Newport Beach that he takes out on a "date" every Wednesday night. Bob plays golf two or three times a week at Mesa Verde Country Club, travels regularly to golf resorts of the great cities of the world, enjoys the theater, opera and Broadway musicals, and collects 19th century and impressionist figurative paintings. Martha Ryan, Executive Coach
Martha Ryan has worked for a number of large corporations in the Information Technology field. She started her career with General Electric and quickly moved into a management position. After a number of years in the corporate world, she joined A.T. Kearney, an international consulting firm, where she continued to work with large corporations, focusing on turn-around management and coaching assignments. She spent six years as the Vice President of Information Technology and CIO of the Shaklee Corporation, a health and wellness company.
Martha is also an experienced business owner, having owned her own consulting business and a plant nursery in Arizona. She is currently an active member of Service Corp. of Retired Executives (SCORE) and serves as Chair of its Women in Business Breakfast Series. She is also a board member of Orange County-based non-profits and is a mentor with the Menttium 100 program, which coaches young women in the corporate environment. Martha has always found joy in the coaching/mentoring role during her management career and in her personal life.
Martha has a B.A. degree in mathematics from George Washington University and lives in Corona del Mar, CA. She travels all over the world and has participated in a number of two week bike trips. She is a hiker, skier, golfer and runner and has completed 10 marathons. She is a subscriber to the Orange County Performing Arts Center, South Coast Repertory and Laguna Beach Theater.
Larry Tucker, Executive Coach
Larry Tucker began working his career as a high school English teacher, but was soon drawn into the business world working for a major insurance company. While in the role of an account executive serving the company's major corporate clients, he was recruited by the human resources consulting firm Hewitt Associates. Larry served in several capacities for Hewitt in his 25-year career with the organization: As one of the principal owners, as a consultant, as a manager, as a coach to executives and as a business developer. In recent years his clients have included organizations like The Walt Disney Company, Mattel, Inc., Northrop Grumman Corporation, Southern California Edison and Fluor Corporation.
Larry's knowledge areas relate to business strategy, especially as it involves people issues: Human resources strategy, employee engagement, executive leadership, HR organizational design, employer branding and change management. He has been a frequent speaker at industry conferences and corporate retreats.
In October 2005, he retired from Hewitt Associates and has since been exploring philanthropic opportunities. He joined SCORE and is currently working through the orientation program. He is a mentor at UCI's Paul Merage School of Business and is exploring teaching a course at UCI. He is on the board of directors at Santa Ana Country Club and Belcourt Hill Homeowners Association.
Larry graduated from Wheeling Jesuit University, is married and lives in Newport Beach. He's a golfer, a bicyclist, an avid reader and a recent convert to Soduku.
Patrick Kelly, Executive Coach
Patrick Kelly spent 30 years in the insurance industry. From 1961 to 1979, he had various management and executive positions in the insurance company sector. In 1979, he joined an insurance start-up organization as a partner. That firm grew to 30 offices in the major insurance centers in the United States and today has volume in excess of $1 billion dollars. He sold his interest in that company in 1995 and joined an insurance brokers firm as CEO. In 1998, that company was merged into the holding company and Patrick retired. From 1998 to 2005 Patrick was a consultant to a Health Company advising the CEO And Management Team on operational issues, corporate governance and board-related matters. For the past fifteen years, Patrick has served on four company boards and numerous not-for-profit boards.
Patrick is the past Chairman of PTC industries. He is a past Director of Affiliated Research Institute, San Diego, Calif., Chairman of American Unity Insurance Ltd., Hamilton, Bermuda, Advisory Board member Flash Underwriting.com, Irvine, Calif., and Board Member of Innovative Search Solutions, Long Beach, Calif. He is the past Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Member of the Finance Committee at St. Joseph Hospital, Orange, Calif. He is presently a member of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Finance Committee at Mission Regional Hospital, Mission Viejo, Calif.
Patrick has a B.S. degree in Business Administration and Finance from the University of Southern California and attended the Marketing Management Program at the Graduate School of Management, University of California. He is married and has four grown children and six grandchildren.
