Crossfire War - TEHRAN WATCH - West Asia Theatre: Tehran - Alexandria/Cairo - Washington - Jerusalem; Tehran Dispatches Two al-Qaeda Units to Attack US - Egyptian Military Forces in Sinai - US Forces on High Alert
Night Watch: ALEXANDRIA - Debka reports that U.S. - Egyptian - Israeli forces in the Sinai Peninsula are on high alert after receiving intelligence information from Egyptian security that two terrorist teams have been sent into Sinai to attack Egyptian and U. S. military bases and tourist destinations frequented by Israelis. The information seems to have come from an al-Qaeda laptop seized by the Egyptians that has designated the targets. One of the teams is composed of three Palestinian suicide bombers that entered Egypt through Gaza on August 31. The second team was formed in Alexandria and is made up entirely of Egyptians. It is said to have 70 members and 5 commanders. [
DEBKA]
This is just two weeks after crossfirewar.com reported Iran Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki met Egyptian officials in Alexandria on August 13. The 70 member unit was first thought to be headed to Iraq to attack the U. S. led occupation. But instead it left Egypt on July 26 and arrived in Sinai just two days later with forged passports made out in false identities. They then picked up weapons from a local cache in preparation to attack U.S. - Egyptian forces in the peninsula.
There are two American brigades stationed in the area along with naval units. One is at the Multinational Force base at Gora near El Arish in the north on the Mediterranean and the other at Sharm e-Sheikh in the south. Forces in the region are on high alert. As crossfirewar.com has stated for the past year Tehran had al-Qaeda establish bases in Sinai as more of a threat to Egypt and President Hosni Mubarak than to Israel due to Mubarak's refusal to support the Jihad and Tehran's leadership in anyway.
Any successful attack in the region, and not just against tourists, but against economic or military targets could send economic shock waves throughout global energy markets making a huge impact on the industrialized world's economy. That would be part of Tehran's response to its dispute with the West-Russia over its nuclear weapons program.
