With 2.5 billion mobiles in use worldwide, the emergence of the 'fourth screen' is one of the hottest topics of debate at this year's IBC, the annual gathering of the world of content creation, management and delivery (Amsterdam, 7-12 September). The event's in-depth exploration of the mobile multimedia opportunity concludes with three sessions of Business Briefings, on Sunday 10th and Monday 11th September.

Featuring exhibitors from IBC's Mobile Zone, all early pioneers in the mobile multimedia market, the free-admission Business Briefings cover the latest delivery technologies, the repurposing of content for mobile, and the importance of the user experience to viewers on the move. Companies presenting include National Grid Wireless, Texas Instruments, Nokia, Qualcomm, Ericsson, Grass Valley, Nagravision, Harris, Snell & Willcox, BT Movio, S3 Group, Orange and Bluestreak.

The Business Briefings complement the dedicated Media on the Move theme day in the peer-reviewed, thought leading IBC Conference on Saturday 9th September. With speakers drawn from every continent and representing broadcasters, content creators, device and infrastructure suppliers, mobile operators and aggregators, the Media on the Move theme day provides a global perspective. Conference sessions discuss the role of content in the mobile environment including an examination of what works well today; evolving value chains and business models and Mobile TV trials and early deployments around the world.

"Mobile TV remains one of the hottest topics of debate in both the broadcast and mobile sectors," said Michael Crimp, IBC's Marketing and Business Development Director. "IBC2006 provides a unique opportunity to explore the role of the video content creation community in mobile multimedia."

As a prelude to the mobile theme day, IET and WorldDAB host a tutorial on Multimedia on the Move designed to introduce delegates to the different technologies and service platforms that can deliver multimedia services to mobiles on Friday 8th September.

In the exhibition, the Mobile Zone, jointly developed and marketed by IBC, IT Europa and BPL, has doubled in size since last year and will bring together applications developers, content providers and technology companies to demonstrate how mobile is impacting on the creation, management and delivery of content. Innovative technologies that change the way people consume and enjoy content, especially when on the move, can be seen in the Innovation Showcase in the IBC New Technology Campus.

In another IBC innovation, "citizen journalists" equipped with mobile phones will complement the renowned IBC TV and media partner Telecom TV in providing video news reports and features from around the show via the IBC website at www.ibc.org

OMA, an international organisation that works to facilitate the global adoption of mobile data services by specifying market-driven standardised service enablers, has chosen IBC to outline its BCAST Specification to the broadcast sector on Monday 11th September.
