Globex, Inc. Announces Positive Trial Results for Its New SCF Technology
Technology Exhibits High Lignin Removal Using Wood Chips
Globex, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: GLXI) today
announced that its new supercritical fluid (SCF) technology has exhibited a
lignin removal of more than 50% at ambient temperatures into a SCF 4-litre
pressure vessel. The material used in the trial was common wood chips.
This technology appears to be effective at a reasonable production cost,
which is an essential attribute in order to be competitive with
conventional commodity fuels. Moreover, this pre-treatment seems to be
effective in converting an important part of hemicellulose to sugars and
thereby leaves the cellulose ready to be treated by hydrolytic enzymes.
This technology involves a green chemistry process, which presents
considerable advantages over traditional pre-treatment methods including
acid or alkaline hydrolysis. Almost all of the pre-treatment technologies
only partially break the lignin-biomass cell structures, which increases
the duration of the process and reduces the yield of enzymatic hydrolysis.
The use of SCF technology in this case necessitates only the use of highly
pressurized CO2 as the chemical reagent, which is recovered at a high rate
in a closed loop system. There is no use of acid or base chemical reagent
and thus waste treatment costs are minimized.
About Biomass Conversion Process
Cellulosic biomass contains approximately 45% of cellulose (can be
converted to fermentable glucose), 30% hemicellulose (also convertible) and
15 to 20% of lignin (a non-fermentable phenyl-propene). Enzymatic
conversion of cellulose and hemicellulose is the most promising way to
economic success because nearly all theoretical yields of sugar are
possible. However, a pre-treatment process (under development by Globex,
Inc.) is essential to break the intimate cell structure of cellulosic
material allowing the hydrolytic enzymes to access the cellulose inside the
structure. This process ensures high product yields, which is the key
economic or revenue driver behind biomass conversion.
About Globex, Inc.
The mission of Globex, Inc. is to develop conversion technologies and
methods related to the production of alternative 'green' energy. Our
objectives are to become an important player in the high-growth ethanol
industry and, in turn, establish a strong position in the green energy
industry. Globex's goal is to capitalize on the rapid rise in the demand
for ethanol that is being driven by the energy bill passed by the US
Congress last year, which mandates the use of ethanol as a fuel additive
rather than MBTE in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In
particular, the bill requires an increase in ethanol use by refiners to 7.5
billion gallons by 2012, which is nearly double the current total of about
4 billion gallons per year.
