Off to a Rousing Start, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's Historic Freedom of Speech '06 Tour Debuted in the U.S. and Canada to Major Critical Acclaim
Produced by Live Nation, the Itinerary Rocks the Still-Free World Through Mid-September
The North American Freedom Of Speech '06
Tour, the first road trip from legendary rock and roll supergroup Crosby,
Stills, Nash & Young (CSNY) in four years, kicked off to great acclaim with
a sold out show July 7 at the Philadelphia area's Tweeter Center in Camden,
NJ. Following its U.S. debut, Freedom Of Speech '06 broke ground in Canada
-- where Young was born -- on July 8 in Ottawa and then sold out in Toronto
and Winnipeg before returning to the States on the 15th for a show in
Minneapolis/St. Paul and three at Denver, CO's Red Rocks. The rest of the
itinerary, running through Sept. 10, features coast-to-coast U.S. concerts
and is currently rolling through a west coast sweep of dates before heading
to the eastern seaboard in early August.
Billed as "An Evening With Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young," Freedom Of Speech
'06 -- produced by Live Nation -- has no opening act, spotlighting an
extended set from CSNY. Repertoire will include their classic work
together, as well as favorites from their individual careers. The tour also
marks the concert debut of songs from Neil Young's politically charged new
album "Living With War." All four members of CSNY have a long history of
socially and politically conscious music, and their classic anthems stand
alongside their newest material in an unbroken chain of spirited activism.
Of the inaugural show, Vit Wagner wrote in the Toronto Star, "The free
speech emphasis couldn't be more timely. The tour's kickoff... came a week
or so after the U.S. Senate barely voted down a constitutional amendment
that would have made it illegal to burn or otherwise desecrate the American
flag." Citing Freedom Of Speech's lighter moments, the Philadelphia
Inquirer's Dan DeLuca said, "There were abundant highlights. Among them:
Nash alone at the piano for a sweet 'Our House,' followed immediately by
Young's emotive 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart.' Nash and Crosby's
harmonizing was impressive throughout." Writing for South Jersey's Courier
Post, Chuck Darrow noted, "Everyone had the opportunity to strut his stuff
and pull from a collective songbook that stands as one of rock's most
significant... an ocean of music that was at once nostalgic and
contemporary."
The Winnipeg Sun/Sun Media's Denis Armstrong headlined his piece on CSNY's
Canadian debut with, "Everything old is new again for reunited,
reinvigorated Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young," adding, "CSNY's music and
message are as compelling today as they were nearly 40 years ago." In a
piece for Australia's online music portal , Paul
Cashmere wrote, "With its anti-war, anti-Bush theme, the message of Graham
Nash's 'Military Madness' seemed as appropriate today as it did when it was
recorded 35 years ago. Songs from the setlist seem to have been selected
for their lyrical content and relationship to the theme of Young's
record... The biting 'Let's Impeach The President' up against the 'Star
Spangled Banner' and following another CSNY classic 'Find The Cost of
Freedom' was equally potent."
Perhaps the New Jersey Star Ledger's Jay Lustig summed up Freedom Of Speech
'06 best with his comment, "This show did something remarkable,
establishing Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young as that ultra-rare phenomenon: a
classic-rock band with a purpose."
