President Bush Follows Minuteman Founder Jim Gilchrist's Lead
Minutemen continue to patrol the border despite National Guard deployment
In a show of solidarity with President George W. Bush, Minuteman Project Founder Jim Gilchrist is praising the President's decision to put National Guard Troops on the border as a step in the right direction.
On Saturday, June 2, the first National Guard troops reported for duty in Arizona where they will assist in extending fences, working on roads, and improving lighting so the Border Patrol can more effectively focus on law enforcement duties.
"The Minuteman Project first recommended putting the National Guard at the border in October 2004," said Minuteman Project Founder Jim Gilchrist. "We are glad the federal government finally awoke to the realization that illegal immigration has reached crisis proportions."
"The Minutemen have had up to 10,000 people on watch assisting the Border Patrol. So while we applaud the President for putting 6,000 National Guard members at the border, we know there is much more that needs to be done," continued Gilchrist. "Right now, there is more attention paid to securing the borders of Iraq than our own nation."
