Positive Action Program School Ranked Most Improved Elementary School in Hawai’i for 2006
HONOLULU (EWORLDWIRE) May 31, 2006
Ala Wai Elementary School in Honolulu climbed 141 spots on the Most Improved List from 2004 to 2006 in a recent Honolulu Magazine piece entitled “Grading the Public Schools.”
Ala Wai Elementary utilizes the standard and evidence-based Positive Action program.
"Positive Action has made a difference in our school. Because of the huge changes brought about by NCLB and the many Hawai'i DOE mandated initiatives, the teachers are very stressed,” said Charlotte Unni, Ala Wai principal. “Positive Action has helped our staff to see the positives in situations, to support the goodness and positive intent in all children. Positive Action has helped the students to be better behaved, more focused, and more socially adjusted."
The elementary school, which includes kindergarten through fifth grade, showcased their ability to achieve amazing results in a short period of time. They have improved to a B- for this year’s survey, moving from the number 213 rank to a rank of 72. Hawai'i schools were ranked using data from the Hawai’i Department of Education School Quality Survey and Hawai’i State Assessment Mathematics and Reading Test Scores.
“Our test scores went up; but a lot of our improved ranking had to do with the way our students and teachers viewed themselves and their school,” said Jarrett Makaimoku, the Ala Wai Elementary School Counselor. “We have been using Positive Action for four years, and our discipline referrals have gone way down. It’s because we have the Positive Action framework to rely upon—the whole school expectations and consistent Positive Action language to utilize.”
In fact, over 80 percent of the student body agreed that students get along with each other well, and over 72 percent felt that students at are well behaved. And when asked if they would change schools if they could, 86 percent of the Ala Wai student body said no.
“We’re incredibly proud of Ala Wai for achieving this honor,” says Positive Action President, Carol Allred, Ph.D. “They have worked very hard and deserve the recognition of being most improved in the state.”
