Senator Chuck Poochigian Discusses Crime Victim Restitution

The audio and English and Spanish transcripts of Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's weekly radio address are below. The Governor's radio address is guest hosted this week by California State Senator Chuck Poochigian, vice-chair of the Senate Public Safety Committee.

Senator Poochigian:

Hi, this is Senator Chuck Poochigian filling in for Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with this week's California Report.

Public safety is government's number one responsibility and we need to do everything we can to keep California's streets, neighborhoods and workplaces safe and crime-free.

That's why, as vice-chair of the Senate Public Safety Committee, I want to applaud the Governor for his actions this week in supporting crime victims and their families.

Violent crime takes a horrific toll on its victims. Lives are lost and families are torn apart. The medical bills can pile up and the emotional stress can last a lifetime.

After all the pain and trauma they've been through, victims and their families deserve all the help we can give them.

And that's why this week, the Governor signed an executive order establishing a crime victim's advocate in his office.

This person will give all crime victims and their families a greater voice, help them navigate the programs and services available to them in our state and help them get the restitution they deserve.

Because in California, it is a victim's right to recover financial damages caused by a criminal for the medical bills, lost wages, and other costs that crime victims suffer.

So far California has collected more than $100 million for crime victims and their families and Governor Schwarzenegger and his partners in the Legislature are working hard to make sure that all victims are aware of their rights.

We want all crime victims and their families to know that Governor Schwarzenegger and I support them and will continue working to protect their rights.
