Frazer Nash Communications: Geoff Ryman Announced As Shortlist Winner Of The Annual Arthur C. Clarke Award

LONDON (EWORLDWIRE) Apr 26, 2006

The Arthur C. Clarke award jury announces the winner of the 20th annual Arthur C Clarke Award is Air by Geoff Ryman . The winner was announced at a ceremony as part of Sci-Fi-London, the United Kingdom's only dedicated science fiction and fantasy film festival on Wednesday 26, April 2006.

Ryman, a Canadian and long term resident in the United Kingdom, is the first all-British shortlist winner in the history of the award. Ryman has won the award previously, for The Child Garden in 1990.

The Arthur C. Clarke Award is regarded as "The booker of the sci-fi world" and is one of the most prestigious book awards in the world.

There other nominees for the shortlist included:

- Never Let Me Go - Kazuo Ishiguro

- Learning The World - Ken MacLeod

- Pushing Ice - Alastair Reynolds

- Accelerando - Charles Stross

- Banner Of Souls - Liz Williams

The jury consists of Stuart Carter, Simon Morden, Dave Palmer, David Pringle and Graham Sleight. The chairman of the judges is Paul Kincaid.

About the Arthur C. Clarke Award

The Arthur C. Clarke Award is awarded every year to the best science fiction novel which received its first British publication during the previous calendar year.

The award was established with a generous grant from Arthur C. Clarke with the intention of encouraging science fiction in Britain, the award was set up in 1986 and the first winner was announced in 1987.

The award consists of an inscribed plaque in the form of a bookend and a cheque. The value of the prize matches the year. In 2001, the award was £2001. In 2006, it will be £2006.

The Arthur C. Clarke Award is the only British award for science fiction with a cash prize and the only award chosen by jury.
