Latino Businesses Are Not Welcome On Pine Ave. In Long Beach, Says Mariposa Restaurant Owner

Inflammatory statements made by Lyle Sardie removed from Official Video Footage of Long Beach City Council Meeting.

LONG BEACH, Calif. (EWORLDWIRE) Apr 7, 2006

Lyle Sardie, owner of Mariposa Restaurant on Pine Avenue in Long Beach, Calif. confronted city officials in an open council meeting, April 4, 2006, regarding the bias treatment that he has received over the past five years by a small group of business owners that conspired to bankrupt his business.

Sardie pointed out the conflicts of interest and the unequal treatment that seems to be a way of doing business for city officials in Long Beach. Other nightclub owners are allowed to operate without any restrictions at all, while Sardie's business has been targeted by one police sergeant that has told Sardie, on more than one occasion, that he is going to bankrupt his business.

One nightclub in particular that is owned by one of the major developers for the city has had continuous and ongoing problems with gang violence, to the point that the city has allowed them under a special permit to pay on-duty police officers to cope with the violence and fights that occur on a weekly basis. Rather than take action against the club owner in the same manner that they did against Sardie, the city is protecting its investment.

When Sardie checked the city’s official Web site the next morning, he was shocked to find that his entire statement before the city council had been deleted.

The video of the speakers before and after were on the site, but Sardie’s statements were nowhere to be found. Statements made by Sardie’s supporters were also removed from the official city Web site.
