Children's Water Education Festival Hosted by Groundwater Guardian Team

  Share With Friends

Next week, on Tuesday and Wednesday, the 10th Annual Children's Water Education Festival is to be held at Hidden Valley Park in Irvine, California.

More than 7,500 third, fourth and fifth-grade students, teachers and parents will learn about water resources, the environment and recycling at the two-day event hosted by the Orange County Water District Groundwater Guardian Team.

Approximately 64 schools representing 20 cities throughout Orange County will attend the event.

The Children's Water Education Festival teaches future environmentalists through hands-on learning activities. The festival, in its 10th year of educating Orange County's students, is a fun, environmental-education field trip designed to teach elementary school children about the interdependence of water, soil, plants, trees, animals and humans. The goal of the festival is to provide the youth with the tools they need to protect and improve our environment each and everyday.

Volunteers from more than 65 public and private organizations will sponsor booths providing interactive presentations for the classes to visit during the field trip.

The support of these organizations is essential to ensure continued success of the festival. Without these in-kind, financial and time committing contributions, many Orange County students would not be able to participate in the event.

Tuesday, April 4, 2006, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
Wednesday, April 5, 2006, 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
8800 Irvine Center Drive, Irvine, California

Over the two days, thousands of children in festival t-shirts will be crawling through tunnels, passing leaky buckets of water over their heads or creating an aquifer out of ice cream and lemon-lime soda.

The festival is the largest interactive field trip of its kind. Organizers say the best photo opportunity time is between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The Orange County Water District organizers Rebecca Long (714 318-8920) and Lisa Sanchez (714 234-8105) have more information.

The Orange County Water District (OCWD) manages and protects the huge groundwater basin underlying north and central Orange County. OCWD is a special district, separate from the County of Orange or any city government. It was created by the California Legislature in 1933 to oversee Orange County's groundwater basin. The groundwater basin supplies more than half of the water needs for 2.3 million residents in the cities of Anaheim, Buena Park, Cypress, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley, Fullerton, Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Irvine, La Palma, Los Alamitos, Newport Beach, Orange, Placentia, Santa Ana, Seal Beach, Stanton, Tustin, Villa Park, Westminster and Yorba Linda.
