According to a March 2006 Symantec report, cybercrime is increasing. In particular, the trend is for attackers to use bot networks for DDoS attempts to extort confidential information. DDoS attacks can target specific Web sites or whole servers. If they're successful, they impair Web site performance, cost businesses in lost revenue and in time fixing the damage afterwards and possibly ruin the business's reputation. With cybercrime as a growing trend, more powerful DDoS tools are expected to be used in the future.
