TCS Aids Philippine Disaster Relief Effort With Its SwiftLink(R) Deployable Communications Solution
Philippine Emergency Response Teams and Local Officials Gain Access to Voice and Data Communications Simultaneously
TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS)
(NASDAQ: TSYS), a leading provider of mission critical wireless
communications, today announced the company supported the U.S. Marine
Corps, III Marine Expeditionary Force, in its response to the Philippines'
mudslide disaster relief effort with its SwiftLink® 2100 deployable
communications systems. TCS' SwiftLinks were used for emergency response
Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) and data communications. TCS provided
its SwiftLink units for disaster response communications requirements until
the Philippine government's communications infrastructure was operational
once again.
To meet the critical needs for communications in the Philippines disaster
area -- which lacked communications infrastructure following the recent
mudslide catastrophe -- TCS configured its SwiftLink 2100 units for
reach-back to the TCS gateway in the company's Tampa, FL, facility.
Working in conjunction with the U.S. Marine Corps, III Marine Expeditionary
Force, which provided local Philippine officials with TCS' SwiftLink
portable command center, TCS configured the SwiftLink to deliver reliable
communications for the officials leading the relief efforts.
TCS' SwiftLink 2100 portable field command center takes about 10 minutes to
set up and uses satellite communications instead of the terrestrial
infrastructure. It supports both classified and unclassified reach-back
requirements of customers with fixed or mobile satellite communications
using Inmarsat or Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) systems.
"We are pleased to work with the U.S. Marine Corps to respond to the
critical communication needs of local Philippine officials in this time of
disaster," said Mike Bristol, Vice President, Network Solutions Group for
TCS. "The SwiftLink solution is very reliable and well suited for disaster
communications. They are ideally suited to the flexible,
bandwidth-on-demand applications that emergency disaster response teams
require and were similarly used for disaster recovery communications after
the hurricanes in the United States in 2005."
