UN deplores bomb attack against former president of Afghanistan

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) today deplored an attack against a former president of the country and parliamentary leader who escaped serious harm in the blast that took the lives of innocent bystanders.

The Mission paid tribute to Sebghatullah Mojadeddi, leader of the Meshrano Jirga, for embodying the success of the democratic process and "the hopes of Afghans for a brighter future."

The police will investigate the attack, which UNAMA said should "only deepen the resolve of the Afghan people to strengthen their democratic institutions."

Calling the deaths caused by the attack "common murder," the mission said: "We know that all segments of Afghan society and the entire international community will join us in expressing revulsion at the use of violence to undermine democracy."
