OCG & ISPNET Stresses "Diversity Is Security" Theme at TELEHOUSE's BREAKFAST ON BROADWAY
Fiber Paths Through Staten Island and New Jersey Offer New Redundancy Options
A completely new dark fiber loop in metro New
York, along with security through diversity and redundancy, were the
leading discussion topics at February's BREAKFAST ON BROADWAY seminar. A
full house heard presentations by Optical Communications Group and ISPnet
at TELEHOUSE's BROADWAY Center situated at 25 Broadway, Manhattan NY.
Privately held OCG profiled the New York area's telecom scene and reasons
behind the need for a new fiber route. OCG opined that much was discussed
but little accomplished by telecoms after September 11th. Most network
fiber now has an average age of twenty years. Signal loss is a consequence
of too many splices and inconsistent maintenance; resulting in networks
largely incapable of handling multiplex and costly to operate. With
improved readiness a necessity, telecoms have daily security discussions
and a renewed willingness to spend money.
These factors created a void for Manhattan bypass routes and connections to
cable heads at Long Island New York's eastern end. "Diversity is security
in a very large respect," said OCG Vice President Ed Stegeman. "Our new
dark fiber routes finally give New York a redundant underground/submarine
loop to bypass Manhattan. By avoiding bridges to access Staten Island and
New Jersey, we eliminated major failure points that exist in other
networks."
ISPnet, also privately held and New York-based, took up the diversity theme
from the ISPs' perspective. The regional service provider utilized its
expertise in high speed connectivity throughout their presentation. "The
goal for ISPs should be to achieve robustness through redundancy," said
ISPnet founder Bob Tinkelman.
Tinkelman advocated that every ISP's evaluation list include obtaining a
carrier hotel's network map, even though most ISPs do not require extremely
high levels of redundancy. Outages are unavoidable, so colocation setups
require two different power sources plus transfer switches. While ISPs
should select locations to achieve true direct routes, those in urban
settings are limited by provider locations and cost. Tinkelman used well
illustrated diagrams to point out absence of true redundancy in various
scenarios faced by ISPs.
March 15th's BREAKFAST ON BROADWAY will focus on how to utilize alternative
regional and local network providers, the diverse routes, services and
costs they offer, and meeting Federal disaster recovery and network
diversity regulations, such as using new fiber paths bypassing Manhattan
via Staten Island. Economic opportunities offered by state and municipal
government programs through tax breaks, abatements, real estate and
business development also will be taken up. AboveNet and the Staten Island
Economic Development Group are co-hosts.
