Right Observation For Democracy
By Chiranjibi B.
The commitment made for peace and democracy by His Majesty the King is highly praised in Nepali community.
The political parties that came into power successively through the mandate of the people were least bothered about doing anything substantial to bring relief to the people. The petty and partisan interests of the political parties led to chaos and the insurgency, bringing much suffering to the people.
It was the uncertainty that led the country into a vicious trap. The commitment to peace and democracy was the motivation that materialised in the form of the February 1 Royal Proclamation. The sole objective was to bring the derailed democratic process on track and intitiate steps necessary for a lasting peace in the country.
Since the Royal move over a year ago, marked improvement can be seen in the law and order situation of the country while the efficiency in the government offices have been enhanced. The beneficiaries being the people, there is no going back on the democratic process.
In this context, the municipal elections for the 58 municipalities were successfully conducted over a month back.
The people's response was encouraging as they could elect their own representatives to man the local bodies and go ahead with the development activities that were stalled for the past few years. The insurgents, too, have been weakened so much that they are resorting to targetting civilians and destroying public and private buildings.
The achievements made so far in maintaining law and order, and social and economic development remain impressive. The positive developments have accrued because of the historic and bold step taken on February 1.
