Thomson and WiNetworks Team Up to Enable One-Way Broadcast Networks to Deliver Triple Play and Mobile Services over WiMAX
Combined Core Competences to Allow Satellite Operators to Enter Triple Play Market
Thomson (Euronext
Paris:18453) (NYSE: TMS) and WiNetworks announced today that they have
signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), that will enable the delivery
of seamless triple play and mobile services (video, voice and high-speed
Internet) over WiMAX. WiMAX is a relatively new wireless technology that
provides broadband connectivity over long distances and is therefore
particularly well-suited for Digital Broadcast Satellite (DBS) operators.
In teaming up with WiNetworks to deliver this cutting-edge, two-way
solution, Thomson is further underpinning its 2-Year Plan intentions to
broaden its products and solutions offering to its media and entertainment
client base.
Enabling One-Way Broadcast Operators to Deliver Triple Play and Mobile
Services
Operators are pursuing triple play strategies for many reasons, not least
of which is that offering more than one service has been shown to increase
subscriber loyalty and attract new ones. WiNetworks' solutions, based on
innovative and patented Hybrid WiMAX DVB (HWDV(TM)) technology, allow one-
way broadcast operators (DBS, DVB-T, MMDS and one-way cable) to extend
their existing infrastructures to deliver a complete bundle of attractive
triple play services including high-speed Internet access, telephony (Voice
over IP), Video on Demand, and interactive TV services to their
subscribers. Furthermore, the technology roadmap provides for mobile
delivery of these services.
One of the industry-leading position enjoyed by Thomson is that of
worldwide leader for Customer-Premises Equipment (CPE) deployed by DBS
operators, cable companies and telecommunications service providers. This
status will bring to the partnership Thomson's proven experience in the
innovative development and industrialization of residential gateways,
including its technological competencies in the area of remote CPE
management and device interoperability for home networking services.
Thomson's established expertise will ensure that the delivered solutions
are able to meet subscribers' high expectations for triple play, are ready
for the mass market and are cost-effective. The two companies will jointly
define sales and marketing engagement plans to optimize the promotion and
deployment of their solutions worldwide.
"As many recently confirmed officially, DBS carriers have recognized the
need to expand beyond their satellite infrastructure in order to deliver
broadband triple play services" mentioned Mr. Effi Atad, CEO, WiNetworks.
"Our solution will enable DBS operators to deliver fully integrated fixed
and mobile connectivity services, and compete on all fronts in the market
for broadband-based communication services."
"We are delighted to team-up with WiNetworks and very excited by the
prospects for our cooperation which will enable Thomson to further
reinforce its solutions offering to such an important client base," said
Ghislain Lescuyer, SEVP, Systems and Equipments SBU of Thomson. "Our
strengths are very complementary and address the key requirements of triple
play service delivery, always-on broadband connectivity and cost-effective
CPE deployments," he continued.
