Trek Bicycles: A Short History

Trek Bicycles was founded in 1976 by Milwaukee businessman Dick Burke. Trek's creation coincided with the early '70s bike boom in the United States, and the brand got its official start in a small red barn in Waterloo, Wisconsin. Begun with just five employees making hand-built, steel bicycle frames, Trek has grown into a globally orientated corporation with sales of over $400 million in 2004. Trek presently employs 1500 people around the world, and the majority of Trek employees work in its five Wisconsin manufacturing facilities.

Three decades later, Trek is still located in Waterloo. Having moved just up the street from the fabled red barn, Trek headquarters are now situated in a modern 225,000 square foot building. Under this one roof everything from sales and marketing to the production plant for our high-end aluminum and proprietary OCLV Carbon manufacturing can be found.

For the last thirty years Trek has dedicated itself to pursuing cutting-edge bicycle design and technology.
