Gov. Schwarzenegger Discusses Investing in Clean Air for Our Children's Health

Governor Schwarzenegger:

Hi, this is Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger with another California Report.

Today, I want to talk to you about my Strategic Growth Plan and how it will help clean up our air and build a healthy future for everyone in our state.

California has some of the most congested cities in the nation. And we know that all the gridlock pollutes the air that we breathe and damages our environment.

It decreases our productivity and increases our health care costs.

And when one in six children in the Central Valley goes to school with an inhaler, it's time for us to think of clean air as part of our critical infrastructure and do something to improve it.

That's why as Governor I took action to get California's dirtiest cars and buses off the streets.

Together with the Legislature, we established some of the toughest emission standards for all new cars sold in our state.

And to improve California's air quality, I signed an executive order setting the most ambitious goals for reducing greenhouse gases of any state or nation in the world.

Already we have seen that when we invest in our environment and in air quality it means more jobs and a stronger economy for California.

Now, with the incredible growth in our population and economy we must redouble our efforts to make sure our kids grow up not only in a land of opportunity, but also in a land of clean air and a healthy environment.

My Strategic Growth Plan dedicates $2 billion to further reducing air pollution and greenhouse gases in our state.

This will bring huge benefits to the people.

With this investment, we will be able to reduce air pollution by about 360,000 tons over the next 15 years.

We know that much of the pollution in our state comes from old trucks, ships and port facilities that operate less efficiently and use dirty fuels.

So my plan goes after those big polluters.

We will:

Replace dirty diesel engines that power the large cranes in our ports with cleaner burning alternatives.
Clean up the fleet of California's big rigs by fixing and replacing diesel engines.
Replace dirty locomotives with new, cleaner models.
And create an electric infrastructure at our ports so that ships can use electricity instead of burning what we call "bunker fuel," which is even dirtier than diesel fuel.

My Strategic Growth Plan gives us the tools that we need for a cleaner and greener California for today and in the future.

Hola, este es el gobernador Arnold Schwarzenegger con otro Reporte de California.

Hoy quiero hablar con usted acerca de mi Plan de Crecimiento Estrategico y sobre como va ayudar a limpiar nuestro aire y crear un futuro saludable para todos en el estado.

California tiene algunas de las ciudades mas congestionadas de la nacion. Y sabemos que todo ese congestionamiento contamina el aire que respiramos y dana nuestro medio ambiente. Disminuye nuestra productividad y aumenta nuestros costos de cuidado medico.

Y, cuando uno de cada seis ninos en el Valle Central va a la escuela con un inhalador, es hora de que pensemos del aire limpio como una parte crítica de nuestra infraestructura y que hagamos algo para mejorarlo.

Es por eso que, como gobernador, yo tome medidas para remover los coches y autobuses mas contaminantes de las calles.

Junto con la Legislatura establecimos unas de las normas de emision mas estrictas para todos los carros nuevos vendidos en nuestro estado.

Y para mejorar la calidad del aire de California, yo firme una orden ejecutiva estableciendo algunas de las metas mas ambiciosas de cualquier estado o nacion del mundo para reducir gases invernaderos.

Ya hemos comprobado que cuando invertimos en nuestro medio ambiente y la calidad del aire eso representa mas trabajos y una economía mas fuerte.

Ahora con el increíble crecimiento de nuestra poblacion y economía, tenemos que redoblar nuestros esfuerzos

para asegurarnos que nuestros ninos crezcan no solamente en una tierra de oportunidades pero tambien en una tierra de aire limpio y un medio ambiente saludable.

Mi Plan de Crecimiento Estrategico dedica 2 mil millones de dolares para reducir aun mas la contaminacion del aire y los gases invernaderos en nuestro estado.

Esto aportara grandes beneficios a la gente de nuestro estado. Con esta inversion, podremos reducir la contaminacion del aire en unas 360,000 toneladas durante los proximos 15 anos.

Sabemos que la mayor parte de la contaminacion en nuestro estado proviene de camiones viejos, barcos y facilidades que funcionan menos eficazmente y que utilizan combustibles sucios. Por eso mi plan trata con estas fuentes importantes de contaminacion.

Vamos a:

Reemplazar las maquinas de diesel que propulsan las gruas grandes en nuestros puertos con alternativas de combustible mas limpias.
Limpiar la flota de traileres de California al reparar y reemplazar maquinas de diesel.
Reemplazar locomotoras sucias con modelos nuevos y limpios.
Y, crear una infraestructura electrica en nuestros puertos para que los barcos puedan utilizar electricidad en vez de lo que llaman combustible bunker que es aun mas sucio que el combustible diesel.

Mi Plan de Crecimiento Estrategico nos da las herramientas que necesitamos para una California mas limpia y verde para hoy y el futuro.
