Luminus Devices, Inc. Emerges With Groundbreaking Technology for Television Industry

Solid State Light Source to Debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas

Luminus Devices, Inc. today announced that its breakthrough alternative light source for projection televisions and other display systems is in commercial production and has been incorporated by several leading television manufacturers worldwide.

Luminus Devices is venture funded and provides the rear projection television (RPTV) industry with the world's only solid state light source designed from the ground up to meet the requirements of microdisplay illumination. The company's patented PhlatLight(TM) technology is being used in a number of television systems with screen sizes between 46 and 62 inches. Luminus originally spun out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and the name PhlatLight stems from the underlying Photonic Lattice technology, that came out of research at MIT.

"When we first got involved with Luminus, we knew we had a solid team to work with," said Morgan Jones, general partner at Battery Ventures. "The company has the key advantages of a unique and revolutionary technology backed by extensive intellectual property, superior management, impressive manufacturing capabilities, and a complete focus on its initial application -- RPTVs. In our view, this is a winning strategy."

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, several leading television manufacturers are demonstrating new television models using PhlatLight technology as their lighting source.

"The demand for our product has been exceptional," said Udi Meirav, CEO of Luminus Devices, Inc. "Television manufacturers have been striving to build large screen displays that can offer consumers a superior viewing experience in a cost effective manner. PhlatLight technology provides them the unique ability to evolve their current product lines with a chipset that offers unprecedented color fidelity, image quality and brilliance, while also promising longevity and reliability that have never been seen before. And PhlatLight products are environmentally friendlier than existing technologies."

Headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, Luminus is growing rapidly to meet the demands of customers around the world, and is constantly expanding its local operations while hiring qualified personnel from all over the country. Luminus has received investments from leading venture capital firms including Battery Venture Partners, Stata Venture Partners, Argonaut Private Equity, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, DFJ-New England, and Eastward Capital.

About Luminus Devices

Luminus Devices, Inc., headquartered in Woburn, Massachusetts, is focused on the clear and singular vision that photonic lattice technology will change the nature, future and worldwide impact of Solid State Lighting (SSL). PhlatLight (Photonic Lattice Light Source) technology, developed by Luminus Devices based on research done at MIT, is the only solid state light source that provides enough brightness to illuminate large screen rear projection televisions (RPTVs). With commercialized PhlatLight chipsets in production, Luminus is leading the industry in designing this new, powerful light source for a variety of applications, including microdisplay RPTVs and other advanced, high-definition displays. Several notable television and consumer electronics vendors are currently including PhlatLight technology in their products. For more information, visit www.luminus.com.
