Night Watch: BEIRUT - As a result of Tehran's assassination of Rafik Hariri in February and other political killngs this past year Lebanon's government is no longer functioning and most leaders stay in their heavily guarded castles and compounds, surrounded by bodyguards. This atmosphere of fear, a specialty of Tehran, has allowed Hezbollah, the terrorist group sponsored by Iran and Syria more freedom. One of the major threats to Israel is based here and Lebanon could be where Tehran intends to deploy its Rapid Deployment Force-Brigade on its mission of sacrificial martyrdom.

Hariri was killed just two weeks after Lebanon's Defense Minister visited Tehran and the day of the assassination Syria's Prime Minister just happened to be in Tehran, meeting with Iran's President Mohammad Khatami, who pledged support for Syria. It seems to be Damascus' role to take the blame for the event that summoned the French President Jacques Chirac to Beirut.

The killing was Tehran's way of indicating that the West should no longer have a major role in Middle Eastern affairs. Syria's government was probably told if they are ever attacked as a result of the Hariri killing, or for any other reason then Iran will join the war in support of Damascus. Crisis creation is another one of Tehran's specialty, along with deception.
