PASADENA, Calif. (EWORLDWIRE) Dec 29, 2005
Is it possible to web-surf right into a Hollywood movie? It is now. Award-winning, independent filmmaker Rolf Schrader has launched a national contest that lets young hopefuls win a part in his upcoming thriller Dead Girls Club. And similar to hit television shows like American Idol, the public will determine which actors win by voting through text messages. The winner will receive a trip for two to Los Angeles and a featured role in a new movie.
Promoting this innovative contest on the film's official website, Schrader appreciates how hard it is to break into the entertainment industry. "This is a great opportunity for emerging talent to jumpstart their careers," said Schrader. "Our American Scream Queen & King Contest is all about giving new faces and people who can't travel to Hollywood a shot at their dreams."
The contest is focused on 15- to 25-year-olds, as all entrants must be able to play a high school teenager.
Two lucky winners (one male and one female) will win a part in Schrader's upcoming thriller, Dead Girls Club. Described by one major studio as a creative blend of Heathers and The Craft, the movie follows a teenage club initiation that goes horribly wrong.
A Hitchcock-type thriller rather than a slasher film, Dead Girls Club addresses social issues facing young Americans, particularly the radical rise in teen girl violence and how peer-pressure can lead to the evil of silence. Inspired by actual events in Schrader's family, the topic of teen violence has touched many American homes.
"The film gives me an opportunity to address these growing problems and hopefully incite discussion by teenagers and families," Schrader said.
In addition to the formal Application Form found on the film's website, all applicants must submit a two-minute video including a brief introduction, their best scream, performance of a monologue from the script and a 30-second improvisation of their choice.
Videos will be evaluated by a panel of industry judges including casting agents and producers. The panel will narrow down the entries into a semi-final group of 75 men and women. Then it will be left up to America to determine the winners.
"Imagine bypassing all of the traditional hassles of auditioning," said Schrader. "It is a win-win for all, with everyone getting great international exposure."
