Election in a free and fair environment in Nepal
By Sudha
The need is to hold the polls in a free and fair environment. The election was not only important for the stability of democracy but also for the development of the country as well. The election officers and assistant election officers must fulfill their responsibilities with a sense of commitment and devotion so that no forces dare constrain the process of successfully carrying out the polls in a democratic and meaningful manner.
There is no denying the fact that the proposed municipality polls have been very crucial in reconsolidating and rejuvenating the democratic process in the country. It is the fundamental rights of the citizens to participate in the polls, which is guaranteed not only by Nepal's laws but also the international human rights instruments ratified by Nepal. No forces reposing trust and faith in democracy should assail and undermine the electoral process and deplore it as it would constitute a negation on the values and ethos of democracy.
It is an obligation of the political parties to respect the rights of the people and use the opportunity to secure the confidence of the people to govern the country. It is the duty of the political parties to stake their share in the democratic process and help facilitate the participation of the electorate in the polls. On a positive note, several political parties, and the general population, have responded favourably and enthusiastically to the call for the elections.
However, some parties are opposed to it and have declared their intent to boycott the polls. This does not suit their democratic credentials and commitments. As called by the chief election commissioner, it would be appropriate on the part of the political parties to associate themselves with the democratic polling process as this alone will contribute to refurbishing their democratic credentials as well.
The minor differences and distrust can be sorted out through mutual discussion and dialogue but it is the obligation of the parties to rise above partisan tendencies and help foster the democratic process through participation in the polls. One should not forget the fact that casting the ballot is the inherent human rights of the people.
