Task Force Med 344th Provides Care to Detainees, Iraqis Hurt by Terrorists
By Alan Gray, NewsBlaze
Task Force MED 344th is a U.S. National Guard unit based in New York, that provides medical care to all of the security detainees within the Theater Internment Facilities in Iraq.
The 344th was caring for the detainee in the story: "Detainee dies at 344th Corps Support Hospital".
The 344th has a field hospital at both Abu Ghraib, 20 miles west of Baghdad; and Camp Bucca, near Umm Qasr in southern Iraq. They also have a medical team at Fort Suse, the newest facility, near the northern city of Sulaymaniyah, to provide medical care to detainees.
The 344th also provides medical care to the military and civilian personnel who live and work at these facilities. In addition, they provide medical care to military members who are brought in who may have been injured "outside" of the Theater Internment Facilities. The 344th has provided medical care to Iraqi civilians who have been injured, again "outside" the TIFs, when insurgents have shot them or tried to murder them with terrorist acts.
Abu Ghraib has a 28 bed-combat support hospital providing level III (surgical) care and at Camp Bucca, a 37-bed hospital, providing level III/IV (rehabilitative) care.
These hospitals provide a full range of services: ICU, radiology, surgery, dental, mental health, etc. There is about $26 million worth of equipment; allowing full-care similar to that found in any US community.
Detainee healthcare is completely independent from the interrogations process. There is daily sick call, wound care and medical pass.
