Premiere Radio Networks Partners With Maven Networks to Deliver Video Segments of "The Rush Limbaugh Show" Direct to Video-Enabled iPods and PCs
Reaffirms Media Companies' Embrace of Direct Delivery of Video Content to PCs and iPods
Maven Networks, Inc., a leading provider of
broadband video publishing and delivery solutions that generate new revenue
streams for content providers, today announced that Premiere Radio
Networks, the syndication arm of Clear Channel Communications (NYSE: CCU),
will be using Maven's software platform to provide 60-second video segments
of its popular "The Rush Limbaugh Show" in both video-enabled iPod and PC
playback formats to subscribers of the "Rush 24/7" premium content
service.
Starting the week of December 12, dedicated Rush fans can view "The Morning
Update" 60-second video segments on their iPod or PC. With today's news,
Premiere Radio Networks becomes the first major radio broadcaster to
embrace direct delivery of promotional video to the new iPods. Premiere
already delivers nearly one million broadcast hours of Rush Limbaugh
podcasting content each week directly to subscribers using Maven Networks'
platform and the global digital media delivery platform from Akamai
Technologies (NASDAQ: AKAM).
Premiere's move also reaffirms media companies' commitment to delivering
content directly to a wide variety of devices. With consumer insistence for
on-demand media -- what they want, when they want it, where they want it --
at an all-time high, the need to reach beyond traditional broadcast media
has soared. Maven's software platform allows Premiere to give subscribers
anywhere, anytime access to a vast collection of Rush Limbaugh content and
preserves the Rush Limbaugh brand throughout all media.
"Rush Limbaugh has always been on the cutting edge of new technologies
including today's support of video podcasting," said Brian Glicklich, vice
president, Interactive, Premiere Radio Networks. "Rush and his website are
redefining the choices listeners have in how, when and where they receive
his radio program. The Maven platform allows us to deliver a seamless user
experience across a variety of media, while extending Rush 24/7 branding.
It also allows us to effortlessly handle authentication, delivery and
tracking."
Maven's is the only platform available today that can deliver full-screen,
highest-quality video for PCs and Internet-connected TVs, then seamlessly
format and synchronize the same content for iPods and other portable video
devices like Sony PlayStation Portables (PSPs). Video content is optimized
for playback on all devices, avoiding the grainy images that result from
using a television or PC to watch video optimized for a 2.5-inch screen.
Akamai's digital media delivery platform ensures there is a secure,
scalable, and reliable network to globally deploy Premiere's video
podcasts.
Premiere Radio's iPod news is in keeping with a recent report by Forrester
Research on the impact of recent VoD initiatives on consumer consumption of
digital media, including the video iPod. "With diverse TV distribution,
brands matter more than broadcasts," Jim Nail and Josh Bernoff, Forrester
analysts, cite in their conclusions. "iPod and online video will reveal
their untapped promotional potential." (ABC/iTunes Cracks Open the TV VoD
Business Model/ November 7, 2005)
"As traditional broadcasters watch consumers' real-time media viewing
patterns shift, they are following their audiences onto a variety of
Internet-enabled consumer platforms," said Hilmi Ozguc, CEO of Maven
Networks. "Maven's platform gives content providers a streamlined way to
deliver high quality video experiences directly to consumers across
multiple platforms simultaneously while building new revenue streams for
the future."
